B.A., Swarthmore, 1980
Ph.D., MIT, 1988
Taught at Pomona College since 1987
The George E. and Nancy O. Moss Professor of Economics

Originally from Delaware, I came straight to Pomona out of graduate school in 1987.  My research interests include theories of consumer spending and saving, the effects of budget deficits on interest rates, and recently the impact of railroads on grain market integration and famines in 19th century India.  I teach several  macroeconomics classes:  introduction, intermediate, and advanced.  Sometimes I teach classes on industrialization technology, and growth.  I have done sabbaticals at Stanford University, UC Irvine, and most recently Honduras.  I have also taught macroeconomics at Claremont Graduate University.  I am married and have two boys, Gregory and Duncan, who keep me very busy.
